Tteokbokki — chewy rice cakes in a spicy gochujang sauce — is one of Korea’s most beloved street foods. Add ramen noodles and you get something even better.

Ingredients (2 servings)

1 pack Hungry Korean Thick Ramen Noodles, 200g Korean rice cakes (tteok), 3 tbsp gochujang, 1 tbsp Hungry Korean Gochugaru Chili Flakes, 1 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp sugar, 2 cups water or anchovy broth, 2 sheets fish cake (optional), green onions to serve.

Method

Soak rice cakes in cold water for 10 minutes if using refrigerated ones. Combine water, gochujang, gochugaru, soy sauce, and sugar in a wide pan and bring to a boil. Add rice cakes and fish cake if using. Cook on medium-high for 10 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sauce thickens and coats everything.

Add ramen noodles and cook for 2-3 more minutes. The noodles absorb the spicy sauce and make the whole dish even more hearty.

Why This Combination Works

The chewy rice cakes and springy ramen noodles create two completely different textures in the same bowl — it’s one of those combinations that seems obvious once you’ve tried it.
